equity at 80k and rising fast

Looks like we are truly back into the upside now the carrytrade snowballs is gathering force.

Its always good, with the events of last week to realise some important things;

1. Dont overtrade

2. Commit to your positions - dont bail at a market low.

3. If you cant take the heat... HEDGE!

I will one day, i swear, build some hedging into the carry grid.

Gridding in

Now looks like a good time to grid in on. I updated the live statment, that already has started building positions. As i said, they are now creeping up across the board. Hedges should be off by now

Monday markets

Another sleepless night last night, probably all the excitement from the childrens party i had been to. A nice side-effect of being up at 3am in this timezone is getting to see the markets early action, particularly considering the events of last week. Ive been using hedges during this drawdown period to nice effect, ive placed and removed 3 now, and made quite a tidy profit overall. The last one came off at 240 as it appears to be gaining some bullish momentum going into the uk session. Im keeping a close eye on it and ready to re-hedge if the bears take over, otherwise its time to start gridding in. I think we will know in the next couple days, and I expect to see some considerable retracements across the board.

When the recovery comes, i dont believe it will be that dramatic, it will creep up and up for 2 weeks before you realise it has happened. As a general rule its always a good idea to check the 4Hour and daily on the trendwatcher (assuming you have access). Currently this tool is only available to easy forex signals members, but if there is interest in it as a standalone tool, we are open to suggestions. It is certainly useful in the context of carrygridding, and we do have a product idea on the table for combining a dashboard panel with the carrygrid to allow remote manual control of the grid. However, setting up the managed accounts ib arrangements, dedicated hosting is a higher priority and will consume most of our resources for the current time.

I think i caught the demo account at its lowest point yet, here is the data from the latest;

Managed accounts

Just a small announcement... we are in the process of setting up an IB arrangement with a broker, that will enable us to trade on behalf of client accounts. There has been a site update to reflect that, and whilst details are being finalised, the information is being made public, so those who are interested can get started with the demo account.

A lot of people will want to know how the account is being traded; that information is to kept secret, but i think its safe to say you will not be disappointed.

sleepless night

For some reason i couldnt sleep well last night. My 2 year old daughter was sick and kept appearning in my bedroom like a ghost to see what i was doing; to check i was sleeping. Perhaps i am developing an intuition: either way i checked in on the markets to see the huge drop in progress. wow!

When it is dropping in front of you, fast, with no end in sight, assuming your account allows it, place a short to cover your long positions. I place a short which covered my longs and a bit more for profit. These runs down generally last for a week at most, so you need to be able to lift that hedge pretty quickly also, so a trailing stop is not a bad idea here either.You dont need that hedge weighing you down like an anchor when the market turns back up.

I was thinking of doing this on the demo account, as a sort of demonstration; but felt that it was a form of interference that couldnt be guaranteed by someone else running the account, and so best so leave it alone, plus it will be good to answer the drawdown questions, which form the bulk of the carrygrid questions.

demo account

im wondering at this point whether to hedge the open positions on the demo account. if it was real money on the table, no doubt i would be, but for the demo purposes i think its better to let it run its course.

Yen Advances as Falling Stocks Prompt Carry Trade Unwinding

It would be wise to hedge any open long positions to cover what could be a major fall.

July 26 (Bloomberg) -- The yen rose against all 16 of the most actively traded currencies as global stocks fell on concern tighter credit will slow the economy and traders bought back yen used to finance investments outside Japan.

Japan's currency strengthened to the highest in three months against the dollar and increased 4.4 percent versus the Brazilian real and 4.1 percent against New Zealand's dollar. The 10-year swap spread, a gauge of what companies pay over benchmark lending rates, widened as much as 77.38 basis points, the most since January 2002.

Something really kicked the yen into gear

Something really kicked the yen into gear in the last couple of hours. I am still trying to track down the news event that occurred. This is a good time to look at drawdowns incurred by the system, the statemnet has just been updated, and gbpjpy has fallen 600 pips in the last 4 days. this is a really typical pattern of this pair, to see 600 pips in a few days. it falls, hard and fast when it does. The account equity is at 85k, with a 96k balance. thanks to some diversification the usdchf trades are providing some positive equity injection (hedge baskets are good), none of the yen pairs are trading right now, and gbpjpy is creating most of the losses. which is good. if any pair is going to carry losses, it has to be that pair. So we have a 600 pip drawdown, creating a 10% drawdown. Thats pretty good money management in my book. Interesting to see how this one pans out, ive been hoping for a cycle like this so we could see the effect of the drawdown.

Weak US Data creating volatility

This morning i was quite shocked to wake up and find myself at the bottom of a 200 pip overnight drop, as the DOW retreated on more weak US data. Through the early asian session we then saw the yen fall on concerns over US data, and illustrated nicely the typical asymmetry between the european/us and asian sessions.

So where does this leave us now? At the time of writing, the equity is at 90k, with most of the drawdown coming from GBPJPY, so we are at a 6% drawdown currently.

None of the recent data really changes any of the fundamentals, and i expect this ripple to provide more buy in opportunities, and the account to go back over 100k by the end of next week. This whole patience thing does take practise.

statement updated

With a reduced open trade set now from yesterdays cleaning up of the ancient, now-unmanaged original carrygrid trades, we have only 8 open trades. 4 gbpjpy, 1 usdchf, 2 usdjpy, a floating p/l of -2546 at the time of writing. All the yen trades are bouncing nicely, and i thought it was time to introduce an antipodean pair into the mix, so i added audjpy. GBPCHF will probably go on there, but not right now.

market opportunities

Early session uk trading, little in the way of news today, with market opportunities i got in on audjpy earlier just with a regular trade. This would be a nice correction to start gridding in on there from. The uninterrupted GBP appreciation against the dollar shows no sign of abating, nor any sentiment that it might happen, and finally, i decided to join the crowd there. USD is looking a bit ropier, it seems there is no good news for the dollar, and it almost seems like the administration actually want it to depreciate, as they seem to be avoiding the subject like the plague. So im holding back on any more dollar trades for the time being. GBPJPY might prove to be the real bargain just now.

private investigations

I looked into today why a bunch of gbpjpy trades were not closed whilst the trend was down and they were in profit. It turns out that they were set up by the original carrygrid (version 1), which had a different comment to the current version. This led to it not recognizing these trades as its own, and not registering them as to be altered. Took some debugging to get there. If anyone else comes across this issue, i can send them an updated EA. The fix will be rolled into the next version that is released, basically we are going to scrap the check for comments, and check the magic number only, which does not change within the carrygrid series.

equity impact of yen strengthening

Its interesting to take this opportunity to look at the effect of the yen strengthening on our overall equity at this point in time. 4 trades were closed on the friday, 3 on GBPJPY , 1 on USDJPY. We have 9 gbpjpy positions open, and 1 usdchf, 1 usdjpy. Floating p/l is $1,174. Monday i will have to take a look, as more of those GBPJPY trades should have been closed, the ones that are from 246/247 levels. This can sometimes occur as the trade close failed, due to a fast moving price. So the current equity is 94.48k, down from a few days ago, but not by that much. With 9 GBP positions, (each around 0.46 lots), you are earning $85/day in swap, just for being in the market. thats over $1000 every 2 weeks, just for holding your positions. Thats $26000/year, or 25% growth even if your position goes nowhere. You see where i am going with this... build your positions throughout the market. In fact i am thinking of writing a new EA to exploit this, called the accumulator... watch this space.
Take a look at that trendline on GBPJPY, quite a neat fit.
At this point we are using the profits made, our original cash investment, of 50k, could be withdrawn and we could continue to trade.

Carry trades pressured

Late friday saw some fightback from the yen, with long black candles across all the yen pairs. Its looking like a good place to start gridding in from. Crisis=opportunity!

Carry trades were pressured to a degree as positve equity markets turned
negative. The DOW, which had been up 90 points early in the session reversed
course all the way to -130 by 10.45AM.The GBP/JPY, which had been as high as
251.07 dropped to a low of 248.6 as USD/JPY approached 121.0The fall in equites
was mirrored by world-wide falling bond yeilds as traders apparently fled stocks
for safer investments. Yeild on the US 10y lost nearly 10 basis points to 4.95.
Some of today's movement was attributed to sub-prime difficulties, but
disapointing earnings from Google, Catepillar and Microsoft also weighed.

what if...

this is something that has been plaguing me for a bit, the old what if...

What if....GBPJPY continues to, say 300, or even 350 over the next year.
What if....i had a small account (say 5k) running a grid on high risk, a close mesh, 1000 positions.

If i am right... would you ever have to work again? the cumulative effect of adding all the positions over time
If i am wrong, say and GBPJPY goes to 150. Yes you would get wiped out.

Ive never got round to calculating it, if anyone would like to do it, im betting your account would

Basically this would provide a great bet.If the odds are 50/50 on it going up or down long term (which they are not, i am being generous), but the gain from a correct bet is significantly higher than the loss from a wrong bet, that presents a very attractive risk/reward ratio.

If someone is good with excel please do a calculation for this, im interested!

.. 10 mins later...

curiosity got the better of me so i just made an excel...

i had it increasing lot size 10% per trade to simulate increased lot size, i didnt do anything about swap.

If it went to 350, you would have $5 million, a run to 300 was $437,917. Food for thought anyway, and ive satisified my curiosity on this for the time being.

thought for the day

I had an idea today, and it was prompted from a question from a user who was trading on the signals, who wanted to auto trade their account. the idea was to combine the carrygrid EA auto trading, with a manual software client, that would determine when to trade on certain pairs and in which direction. As i operate a signals service, i am already effectively doing this, as i have to ascertain optimum entry and exit points during the day. It would be a way of managing the EA, without having to read my blog entries and do any actual sort of thinking. So basically you would run the EA on all the different pairs, and whether the ea would be trading or not on a certain pair (which is also linked to fundamentals, not purely technical analysis) can be built into the EA. Also, when to close out positions could happen earlier, when to stay in for a long run and ignore smaller fluctuations. It could also be possible to switch the EA to change trading style based on market conditions, so it could change to a take-profit type grid in a ranging market, and then switch back. the possibilities are that much wider. It would require a software program to be running on each client to retrieve instructions from the central server, and communicate instructions to the EA on what to perform. Then it becomes a sort of meta or super EA. Of course you would have the ability to switch this off and run in auto mode.

the primary function would be however to determine which pairs to trade on, in which direction (we may go swap negative in some cases), and the EA would take it from there, as it still has to take care of the money management aspect.

interesting? would you find this useful? please post your comments... this may become reality.

GBPJPY charts

I thought today, to do something different, and to start a trend for some different things, im going to post some charts. The first chart is taken from the dedicated server that runs the MT4, that the demo is running on. Until this week it was running on daily chart, on GBPJPY only. the chart shows where the buys were placed and where the profit was taken. Its clear to see the following

  1. Results would be improved, by proactively managing the EA.

  2. The big downspike could have been the start of a major correction, and whilst it was not the ideal time to exit, it was the right thing to do.

  3. If we wanted to get aggressive, we could be buying in on the way down, and we would have picked up a lot more trades. But this is martingaling, and we dont do that. We go with the tide, not against it.

  4. The limit of 10 trades was ok for this gridmesh size, in terms of covering the range of the market.

  5. Lets not forget that Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

  6. We should have traded bigger lots we would be retired by now!

GBPJPY breaks 250

GBPJPY breaks 250!! This really highlights the importance of using the long term charts. If we were in on daily or even weekly it would have been an uninterrupted series of accumulated winning trades. As it stands we are still doing nicely on the 4hour chart at the moment. My only regret is not opening up on GBPCHF as well.

I had a question sent to me;

I saw on your new site, under current results, you're now running this on
usdjpy and usdchf. Please share all the pairs you've had successful
with. I thought it was only being used on gbpjpy and gbpchf.

The pairs ive had success with are the following; nzdjpy, audjpy, usdchf, usdjpy, gbpjpy, gbpchf, eurjpy. Some pairs are better than others, based on ;

  • Volatility (high is good)
  • Swap paid
  • When the grid was opened

I would rate GBPJPY, EURJPY, NZDJPY and GBPCHF as amongst the best. The dollar is taking such a battering at the moment its not even funny, but its starting to look like a good place to grid in from. USDCHF has always been a tricky one for me, usually leaving me with the biggest drawdowns - definitely not a beginners pair.

I will post some charts and information over time to give more substance to this, but not now, as its late, and no one yet has posted on this brand new blog, except myself, so until they do, im laying low.

GBP shooting up

Due to the recent CPI data, GBP pairs have just taken a run upwards. All the EAs should be trading it at this point in time, and taking in some big profits. At the tmie of writing we are at 249.36. GBPCHF is showing even stronger momentum, breaking out of its recent range. USD pairs continue to range in anticipation of important data released later on today.

update: bloomberg broke with the story now.

July 17 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. inflation slowed less than economists forecast in June after transport costs and furniture prices increased, cementing investors' expectations that the Bank of England will raise interest rates further.

Carry Grid EA Results update

GBPJPY is now heading upwards again, bringing up the equity. The USDCHF and USDJPY trades are now operating, with just one of each in progress. USDJPY is ranging, and USDCHF is ranging with a slight downtrend, the most challenging situation for the EA, so im eager to see how it performs against this market situation. We are closing back in on the 100k target which will mean the account has doubled in 3 months!

First CarryGrid EA post

Welcome to the new myfxtools blog! Here we will be publishing all updates on the carry grid EA forward testing progress, along with any site updates and news.

On the 16th July, we switched to the 4 hour chart for all the pairs. GBPJPY is falling, we have started running on USDJPY and USDCHF, but no trades running due to negative trends on both pairs. Pretty quiet days trading, most traders are waiting for news later in the week. We will stop posting the statements in the statement area and focus on presenting results and updates here.
